Look at what The Lord has done!

Well, after months of teasing I'm finally getting around the sharing the BIG news. Thank you for being so patient. :-)

Last year the Lord started dealing with me about a studio. My business model doesn't include a studio as I work out of my home. And, after speaking with a myriad of photographers who own studios it became clear that right now my business doesn't need the overhead associated with a photography studio.

But, the Lord kept leading me to different locations and asking me "do you want that?" Deep down, if cost wasn't an issue, I'd like to have a nice and trendy space to interview clients and showcase my work. My home is cool and trendy, and I have my work mounted everywhere, but it is too small to really make the "presentation" that I desire. So, I would always answer God and say, "I can't afford a studio."

Still, God kept leading me to different places and I would experience the same prompting over and over again. My Pastor is always telling us that God will always show you something that is more than you think you can handle because He is going to do the work, not you (I probably jacked-up that statement but you get the idea). It's by His might, not mine. So, I finally reached the point where I answered the Lord and said, "OK, it's too expensive for me right now but if that be your will then I receive it."

Well, in May of this year something very special happened - I now share a facility that includes a hallway with marble floors, an elevator, a meeting area, full-size kitchen, fireplace, espresso machine and vaulted ceilings all surrounded by rich redwood paneling. And, it's WiFi! I am very comfortable interviewing couples regarding their destination weddings and family portrait sessions in this space.

But, that's not all! I now have an "office/studio" without all of the expensive overhead that I didn't want. Isn't God good? No, I don't own it. And "yes" I share this space with other people and business owners but that isn't a problem. When I'm there I feel like singing the Jefferson's TV theme song "Movin' on up."

So, there you have it. That's the big news I've wanted to share with you. All I can say is look at what the Lord has done!

This is one of the facilities I looked at. This one is significant as this became available right around the time I stop fighting God and said "...I receive it."

Meet Alijah

Happy Saturday! Yesterday, I had the opportunity to photograph my friend's new baby boy Alijah. And, what I thought would only take thirty minutes took a good hour+ as we had so much fun playing with him. Yes, I probably spent just as much time playing with him as I did photographing him. I love children so I can't help but want to see them laugh and play when I'm around them (blame it on the big kid inside of me).

What was also special about this session was the care and attention Alijah's father gives him. Unfortunately, in our society men get a bad rap as not being affectionate and that simply isn't true.

Maybe it's a "guy" thing but yesterday his uncles were there and all of us were happy, laughing, and just joyous watching little Alijah. I was so focused on capturing all of Alijah's moves and expressions that I didn't photograph his uncles. But, they were laughing and playing with his toys to get him to smile and you could tell that they are in love with their new nephew. The love was so thick that you could literally cut it with a knife. And, it was great to see!

So, here's a few images from our afternoon photo session that I thought you'd enjoy. Ladies and Gentlemen may I have the privilege of introducing you to the next President of the United States (or whatever else his heart desires) - Mr. Alijah Walter Brown.

When we first arrived at the park this young man was playing with his parents about 50 feet away. When we first set up he saw the basketball and came right over, picked it up, and started playing with it. Well, about 10 minutes later as I was shooting Alijah with the basketball he came over again to play with it but we weren't finished. That's when I snapped these images as this moment was just too cute to miss.

As we were finishing up this young lady walked over and informed us that the park was closing and we would have to leave. So, I thought she was cute and asked her to take a picture with Alijah. At first she seemed taken aback and when she started to walk away Alijah started crying. Immediately, she rushed over to see why he was crying and as the saying goes "the rest is history." Her face lit up like a Christmas tree and she was "oohing" and "awwing" all over him.

Isn't it interesting the effect babies have on people? I've seen babies bring together people who had refused to speak with one another, never mind be in the same room with each other. And yet an infant, with one gesture, can melt even the hardest heart of stone and turn it into jelly. All I can say is that children are a gift and a miracle. Have a great weekend!

The End of Times

What is going on here? I had to work late last night and when I walked out of the door headed for my car this is what I saw. This humongous storm system swept though from nowhere. The clouds were moving very fast and rolling into one another with lightening everywhere. What was strange was that there wasn't much thunder. Call me crazy or "you've watched too many horror movies dude" but it looked like the end of life as we know it. And, as soon as I returned to my car and closed the door the heavens opened up and it began to rain like crazy.

Here's a few more images from tonight's incredible sky show. The image above is straight-out-of-camera, all I did to it was remove the digital noise and add contrast. I have to admit that I did "play" around with the light and colors in the images below.

All I can say, especially after tonight, is please get your life together (if you know what I mean).

OK, besides horror movies I've probably seen too many Sci-Fi flicks as this looks like a portal to another universe. Do you feel me on this one?

This was a big storm system as I have at least an hour commute and this was the scene on my end of town. There was this really cool magenta color to part of the sky as the setting sun was being swallowed by the storm clouds. Again, call me crazy but I have never seen anything like this before. I think Jesus is coming back soon, real soon. Be blessed!

A truly remarkable man

With all of the world talking about the game of Tennis I wanted to share something special with you. After his retirement he never returned to the game. But, one of the greatest, least known, and (outside of the tennis world) least respected players of all time - Mr. Bjorn Borg is finally getting the respect he deserves.

If you watched last year's or this year's Wimbledon finals then you heard John McEnroe talk about how disciplined Bjorn was and how great of a player he was. And yet, even the man the greats are calling "the greatest player to ever play the game" couldn't top Bjorn's record.

Here's a short interview with the player who forever changed the game of tennis, both inside and outside of the court. Bjorn, you truly are one remarkable man.

I've just witnessed the impossible!

Yelp, he did it. Two rain delays, almost five hours later and in almost complete darkness he did it. Rafael Nadal has just defeated five-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in what has to be THE greatest match in tennis history. Nadal defeated Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 in what is now the longest final match in Wimbledon history. Even the legendary John McEnroe, who has played in some of the greatest matches in Wimbledon history, called today's affair the greatest he's ever seen. In fact, he looked like he was in tears towards the end of his post-match interviews. And if you know anything about John McEnroe you know that he ain't the cryin' type.

I've been a tennis "nut" for at least 20+ years. At one time in my life I wanted to become a professional tennis player. I started playing too late to be a pro but if I was good enough I would have tried my hand at the ATP Tour. Being involved in tennis for that long I've been blessed to witness some of the greatest players to ever play including (in no particular order):

Borg
Connors
McEnroe
Lendl
Everett
King
Navratilova
Graf
Becker
Cash
Agassi
Sampras
The Williams Sisters
Edberg
Wilander

...just to name a few. And I have to admit that what I saw today was the finest match I've ever seen.

What made it so special was not only the history and drama but the level of play was remarkable. For example, one of Federer's forehands was clocked at 101 mph. Both of these guys serve around 120 mph and they hit that hard for the entire match.

Today's match was more like a Heavyweight Championship Fight between the world's best sluggers. They entered the ring, both champions, and hit each other with everything they had, standing toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring, both refusing to quit.

Believe it or not, despite admitting that this loss was hard, there were times during the trophy ceremony where Roger seemed happy for Nadal. But, given his level of professionalism and sportsmanship I'm not surprised. As we say in martial art circles, "they both fought with honor."

Even if you're not a fan of tennis I hope you had an opportunity to see today's historic match. It went back and forth with both men fighting to the bitter end. And because of their respect for one another and high character as athletes, it was also a great example of how to conduct yourself with class in winning and in losing. Wow, what a match!

Rain Delay...

Not quite the view from Wimbledon but you get the idea. This is a big development as Rafael Nadal was on the verge of possibly winning in straight sets and finally beating Federer. Last year, when he was even closer to possibly beating Federer he injured his knee, took an injury time out, and that was enough time for Federer to pull himself together and win his 5th straight title. So, will history repeat itself? Only time will tell...

Breakfast at Wimbledon

Today is a great day for Tennis fans all over the world. I'm up early to see if the world's No. 1 player Rodger Federer can win his 6th straight Wimbledon title against his arch nemesis and world's No. 2 player Rafael Nadal. According to the official Wimbledon website:

"This will be the third straight Wimbledon final between the two, with Nadal getting closer and closer. In fact, last year's five-set classic was the only time Federer has been taken the full distance on grass in his 65 successive victories on the surface.

If he wins, Roger will eclipse Bjorn Borg's Open era record of five Wimbledons in succession, set between 1976 and 1980, and he has certainly made impressive progress this past fortnight, winning all six of his matches in straight sets and only dropping serve on two occasions.

Federer is also still hot in pursuit of the holy grail of the men's game, the record of 14 Grand Slam titles held by Pete Sampras. Victory today would lift the Swiss to 13, with another of his favourite tournaments, the US Open, looming over the horizon late next month."

Here's a quick testimony - I don't have cable as I don't watch much television. So, my "Rabbit Ears" could never really tune-in NBC that well so I couldn't see any of these great matches. But, God has blessed me and this year I'm watching the finals on a wide screen in High Definition. God is good!

This should be a great match. Now, where's my cup of coffee? Hmmm, I wonder if Starbucks is open this early?

Yes, I wasn't thinking.

I went to see Will Smith's new movie Hancock at my local 30+ megaplex. What in the world was I thinking? School is out; it is the weekend; it is the July 4th Holiday weekend; and I went to a see a Will Smith movie during its opening weekend. Will's July 4th holiday movie openings have been some of the largest grossing holiday movie openings of all time.

To top that off, I decided to get some movie popcorn and a drink. The smallest combo they had was $11.00. You gotta be kiddin' me? You see, I never buy snacks at the movies so I was surprised at the prices. To keep from consuming all of the sugar and syrup in the soda I asked for water. $11.00 bucks for a small popcorn? I must be losing my mind...

Crazy Clouds

Wow! We have had the most bizarre weather this summer. Lots of thunder storms that sometimes show up and at other times pass over but make the sky look like it's Armageddon.

But, one of the bonuses of having so many strange weather systems in our region is that they produce some of the most beautiful night skies you will ever see. So, here's to a Happy Wednesday and the beauty of the crazy clouds!

Yesterday was the first day of the famous Taste of Chicago summer festival. And, being so close to the ocean I couldn't help myself and left the "Taste" to take a boat tour along the harbor. Summer Fun!

A few weekends ago we had our annual Summer Pool Party and it was a blast! Last year I broke my Olympus Stylus Epic as it got wet during a cannonball by one of the kids (once it dried out it worked but I didn't want to risk it again). So, this year I picked up an underwater case for my Fuji F10 and this event was the time I tried it out.

I was a little skeptical at first but it held up well. It did come apart twice but fortunately there was no damage to my camera. I don't know if I rolled it up correctly so I will have to "play" with it some more.

Being able to be in and under the water is great as you're exposed to angles and perspectives that are only available from being in the water. If anyone uses this brand of underwater casing I'd love to learn more about your experiences with it. And, if you'd like to learn more about it check out this website.

Never forget that as an entrepreneur and artist you are always selling an experience. Starbucks, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, BWM, Panera Bread and Lexus all understand this basic principle of marketing in the new millennium. And because they understand how to reach a sophisticated audience born with and adept at using the Internet/YouTube/iPod/iPhone/Playstation (insert your favorite whizbang gaget) these brands continue to survive and thrive despite the economic highs and lows of our economy.

Well, meet a couple of guys who used a little creativity and an ordinary/everyday product, in an over-saturated market, to create prosperity, freedom, and long-term growth for themselves and for their company. I believe this falls into the category of "Why didn't I think of that?"

Summer Love

Summer Breeze

Happy Friday! And, thank God it's finally here.

I love the summer, I mean I really LOVE the summer. Sunshine and good weather just does something to me creatively. Although the winters here are crazy the summers are mild and quite pleasant. Recently, I had to spend some time downtown and couldn't resist sharing some of the beautiful Chicago summer with you.

There are two fountains in Millennium Park where you can get drenched in water. There were hundreds of kids there having a ball. In fact they were having so much fun that I wanted to join in and get wet. I wasn't prepared that day but I will return and join in - beer belly and all.

Here's to the joys of youth and the blessing of summer! Have a great weekend.

The Internet is a beautiful thing! With a little help from Google I found my old martial arts instructor and karate association from Germany! Is that cool or what? Check it out:

Black Knight Karate Association

We practiced the Okinawan art of Gojuryu and I was with them for a little more than a year. This was my instructor in Germany - Mr. Oneal (we called him Sgt. back then). Believe it or not I've met and trained with this man - Mr. Edward M. Brown Jr. And, before I moved to the Midwest I use to train with the world-renowned Dr. He-Young Kimm in Han Mu Do.

Wow, this is bringing back so many memories. I'll have to scan some of my old black and white prints from the last tournament we hosted on our base. Warning - you're gonna laugh when you see me with my white belt competing in a forms competition. And as some of you may know I used to wrestle way back in High School. I'm not going to post a picture of me in my wrestling tights - the world is not ready for that one yet. Hey, I'm not ready for that one!

A night out with friends

Recently, I had the opportunity to get out of the house and have some fun with a few friends. I don't get out that much so I couldn't resist the invitation for a good time and some good food.

We all met up at a really cool place called Jersey's Pizza and Grill. This was my first time there and it is a great place to chill, grab some really good food, and check out your favorite sporting event. Since we were all martial artist we went to check out the UFC and the place was packed with martial artists from all styles and walks of life. They have two 6' x 10' HD big screens and thirty two 42" HD Flat screens. And the neither the food nor the decor dissappointed.

But, what was really special was that I got to meet some of my fellow students that I haven't met, and was reunited with an old friend from "back in the day." Here's a few snapshots from our evening out that I hope you enjoy. If you're ever in the area do yourself a favor and check out Jersey's.

This is Lorenzo and Bill, two of our school's instructors. Not only are they fantastic martial artists, but they are geniunely great human beings. Everyday they live their lives to help other people any way they can. I've got a lot to learn from them about serving others as they are the "real deal."

Although I just met these guys that night, they treated me like we had been friends for 20 years. I don't know what it is about HapKido but it attracts some of the nicest and "real" people I've ever met.

Lorenzo took some time to share his new website with us. I'm so happy for him and all of the movie success he is having. Not only is he staring in the soon-to-be released martial arts film "Hand-to-Hand", but he's also written and is directing his own film this summer!

This is Bill and Sal. Seven years ago when I started training in HapKido they were both black belts and teachers at our old school. Way back then they endured my myriad of questions and would always take time after class to help me and any other students who needed help.

Well, over the years I was reunited with Bill but had lost touch with Sal. Bill kept in touch with Sal and told Sal that I was training again and he came out to see me. It was really cool seeing Sal after all of these years. He looks great and is now not only highly ranked in HapKido but is also a top Aikido instructor.

The Windy City

Chicago is a great big city! I am originally from NYC and have traveled and lived in several cities both in the US and abroad. I LOVED Dusseldorf and Munich. And, Paris wasn't bad either. But, Chicago has become one of my favorite big cities.

Where else in the world can you go from the Yacht Club to the Magnificent Mile to Millennium Park in a little more than a bus/cab ride. Not to mention just about every kind of food you could imagine is right at your fingertips. Yes, the winters are brutal but what a beautiful place this is in the summer!

A Former Life

Happy Monday! Whew, what a week. Time is truly speeding by and waits for no one. But, I've got some cool stuff to share with you so it will be worth it in the end.

While searching for a print for an upcoming portrait competition I "ran" across these images from my days as a technology executive. The young lady on my left is Kim Cattrall, now famous from Sex in the City. Unfortunately, I don't recall the actress' name to my right but both of them were starring in a series on the USA Network. They were on-hand to promote their series and USA had this crazy idea of creating personalized TV Guide covers.

They were both very nice and seemed to really enjoy meeting everyone who stopped by. I'm glad to see the tremendous success Ms. Cattrall is having as she was really kind (this pose was their idea as my idea was really boring).

Although I'm a photographer I love taking pictures with celebrities. It must be the TV guy inside me. Here's a few more that I thought you'd enjoy.

Am I My Brother's Keeper?

I don't recall if I've ever shared this with you before? And maybe subconsciously I was a little afraid to. But no more - for we overcome through the power of our testimony!

Not long ago while organizing several hundred print photographs I stumbled upon this image. It is 18 years old and was from the Ramstein Air Show Disaster in Germany. I thought I had given all of my images from this event to the authorities but somehow this one made its way home. It is titled "Am I My Brother's Keeper" and after all of these years it still brings back memories as if it were yesterday.

I won't go into detail as there's so much that happened that day but while I was taking this shot my roommate grabbed me and my other roommate and we started to run as fast as we could. Almost immediately I could feel the heat behind me as the flames from the burning jet fuel began to engulf the area where we were standing. As we felt the heat on our backs getting closer to us we suddenly dove behind a garbage dumpster and hugged the ground. We didn't know if the burning fuel would come over the dumpster, but it was all that was there to cover us.

When we heard the fuel splatter on the dumpster, we got up and witnessed what could only be described as a war zone. Not to be morbid but there were hundreds of people sitting under those canopies engulfed in flames in this image.

On that day my roommate was his brother's keeper - he saved our lives.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because as some of you know I've been really working hard to get my life "back on track." How I got off track I don't know but all I know is I have ended up in a place that I didn't plan on reaching. The only way to describe it is that my life no longer represents me. So, I've had to learn how to exercise my faith in a whole new way to get back to a place where my life represents me.

If you're a frequent reader of my blog then you know that I am often open with my life experiences. I believe that by occasionally sharing my "ups and downs" I can help someone else know that they are not alone, God has not forgotten about them, and they can overcome whatever they are facing in life. That is the spirit of this post as I often have to remind myself of my victories and what God has brought me through. I should have died that day or been severely burned and crippled for life and yet, I wasn't. So, no matter what the enemy says about our lives he's a liar and we have the victory!

Just like David rehearsed his victories before defeating Goliath we should also constantly remind ourselves of what God has done for us. I know that if you change your focus you can change your life.

So, if someone out there is feeling down and defeated be encouraged - the battle is not over and you win!

Thank God for His goodness and focus on what your heart desires and together we will transform our lives into the experiences that best represents us! We are our brother's keepers and I hope this transparent moment encourages someone to never give up, quit or faint!

The Marina

One of the wonderful things about living in this city is that I'm so close to the water. I've been in love with water since I was a child. And, I've been in love with boating ever since my Grandfather took me fishing when I was little.

As I've gotten older I'm not so crazy about all of the maintenance associated with owning a boat but I LOVE to be out on the water. In fact I'm seriously considering getting a Jet Ski so that I can quickly and easily get back out there. So, I can't help myself as I'm drawn to water like a moth to a flame.

While taking a break from the Gospel Music Festival I "found" myself at the marina on a beautiful afternoon. And it didn't disappoint. For those of you who "feel" me about water and the ocean, here's a few pics from a little time spent at the marina. Enjoy and be blessed!

What a start to a great week! Here's a few more images "hot off the press" from this weekend's Gospel Music Festival. I hope you enjoy them and I can't wait to share with you the images from the marina! You know how much I love water and yachts.

I included this image as this young lady was sitting approximately 100 feet from the stage. It is a strange paradox as she is homeless and in despair and yet just a few feet away was deliverance. Call me a dreamer but I believe that the word she heard in song will take root in her heart and she will let God heal her soul and transform her life.

One of the things I love about Gospel music is that it brings together people from all walks of life. We all came together to clap our hands, stomp our feet, and praise God in the park. There were people from all over the world and it was great singing, dancing and praising God together!

Operation Transformation Update

Well, I finally did it! I began training again in Hapkido and I love it! I've been back to class now for two weeks after a 7 year departure. When I left I was half-way to my black belt and now the time has come to finish what I started.

Friday nights are special as Mr. Eric teaches and he's known for his cardio-from-hell workouts. I kept hearing from my training buddies stuff like, "have you been to Eric's class yet" and "..it's so hard..." Well, since I've returned after such a long layoff I've found ALL of the classes hard. And, tonight was my first class with Mr. Eric and I could really use some aspirin and a hot tub.

But, it's all good and after the first few months my body should be used to being hit again, my wrists/shoulders being twisted every "which-a-way," and my legs being stretched like Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four.

Do you believe dreams do come true?

I know that sounds like a cliche' but do you really believe dreams can come true? To be perfectly honest, sometimes I have my doubts. And whenever I feel like giving up I "run" across a story like Anna's.

They told her that she couldn't sing and that the best she could hope for was the chorus. Her own voice teacher told her that her voice was just average. But, she didn't let that stop her and at the young age of 16 she moved from her small town in Russia to St. Petersburg to become a singer.

She enrolled in the Conservatory of Music and took a job washing floors at the legendary Mariinsky Theater so that she could enjoy the music at night. And as fate would have it one day she had an opportunity to audition for the Musical Director and as the saying goes, "the rest is history." As we used to say down south, "this girl doesn't sing, she sangs!"

But, she didn't stop there. Being true to who she really was she decided to create music videos for Opera (something never done before) and pose for fashion magazines. I can hear opera fans all over the world screaming blasphemy. Right? Wrong.

Her CDs are some of the most popular and best-selling classical CDs in the world. She even takes the number one spot on several pop charts in Europe over Beyonce' and Brittany Spears. And guess who's one of her favorite musical artist? Luciano Pavarotti or Placido Domingo? Try Justin Timberlake.

But her Diva-ness doesn't stop at fashion magazines and music videos. Being the rebel that she is she doesn't have an entourage' or a limo and frequently just walks around both San Francisco and Russia like a regular person.

Because I was classically-trained as a Baritone back in High School I have a "soft" spot for classical music. And the fact that Anna is drop-dead gorgeous has absolutely nothing to do with my admiration of her work ;-)

So, do you believe dreams do come true? God is no respecter of person and if He did it for Anna, He will do it for you and me! If you need a little motivational boost check out the short videos below. Remember, nothing can stop you but you.

Over the weekend I met up with some of my old training buddies and it was really cool to see everyone again after all of these years. I'll share more in another post but since I'm training again (more to come) I wanted to introduce you to one of the most gifted martial artists to come along in a long time. For some strange reason he is just now beginning to make a name for himself in the US but has been an International superstar for years. Ladies and gentlemen meet Donnie Yen!

Here's a little insight into this world-renowned martial artists courtesy of the Discovery Channel. What's nice about his most recent films is that he's moved away from the high-wire Kung Fu work and focuses on real self-defense. He doesn't use wires anymore and performs most of his stunts himself. Plus, he's now incorporated Brazilian-style Jujitsu into his fighting. He's a gifted martial artist, actor and director.

Finally, here's a little known fact about Mr. Yen - his Mom taught him Kung Fu. I wouldn't tease him if I were you...

Reunited with an old friend

Happy Saturday! Just popped in to share a few images with you that are personally very special to me. While I was home I cleared out a storage area for my family and "low and behold" I found my first SLR camera - the mighty Olympus OM-10!

I received this camera as a gift back in High School (that's over 20 years ago). It was a bit pricey for those days but my Mom and Dad thought that my interest in photography was cool and brought it for me. And because of the cost I had it for a whole year before I could get a flash - that explains my love for natural light. ;-)

I put it to good use as I shot stuff for my High School's newspaper and yearbook. I didn't have an open space in my schedule to take a photography class so I would ask the photography teacher questions after school.

This camera has been half way around the world, survived the Ramstein Air Base tragedy, been shipped overseas via boat, and spent the last 12 years living inside of an old/damp/dirty camera bag in 100 degree weather in storage. And get this - it's in great shape, just like I left it.

After several moves I thought it was simply lost. But, just like an old friend we were only separated by time and once reunited simply picked up where we left off. You know I couldn't wait to put a roll of film in it to discover if it worked after all it's been through.

It's not very practical for today's demanding photographic environment, but it was a wonderful experience to go back and shoot stuff "old skool" and fully manual.

So, here's to good ole' fashioned photography and the joys of seeing an old friend after years of being apart. Have a great weekend!

Now this is "old skool!"

Although they no longer have the status and prestige that they used to have, Olympus invented the "through the lens" metering that we all use today. And, the OM series was the first line of SLRs to have this feature.

This is how a lens should be built! Rock solid and metal with a big focus ring.

Now I know why they call Olympus lens fans "Zuikofreaks." This camera came with a 50mm 1.8 prime that is simply amazing! Although some could argue that today's sophisticated coatings make modern lenses sharper than older lenses, this lens is unbelievable in every category that lenses are measured. It is well built, sharp even into the far corners, and the bokeh/depth of field is like nothing you will see from today's lenses. Olympus was always known for producing great lenses and this one is no exception.

Although I'm out of town this week I do check my email and to my surprise discovered that one of my photos was chosen as the "Photo of the Week" on Calumet Photo's website. Yeah!

This is my 2nd entry and I didn't know if it would make it as my 1st entry was one of my best images and it was rejected. So, I'm really pleased that they choose this image for the week of May 13th.

I've always wanted to be on the big screen. As part of the growth of Samuel Barr Photography I've been working really hard on all of my "back end" operations and equipment. On the Road Again...

...I feel like singing that old Willy Nelson song. I'm on the road again and I love traveling. I don't know why I like it but I've always enjoyed traveling even as a child so I guess it's in my blood. I'll be away for a "little while" but will still post to my blog as there's been much going on at Samuel Barr Photography.

One of the joys and pains of traveling are the long hours in airports. Recently, I flew through Philadelphia on my way to New York and it was a great time as the Philadelphia airport has changed since the last time I was there. In fact, it reminded me more of a shopping mall than an airport. Given the reputation airports have for high prices I wonder if many people take advantage of this unique shopping experience? Let me ask you - what was the last thing you purchased in an airport and why?

The Philadelphia International Airport

I haven't seen one of these since I left the South. They use to have the best Chicken Biscuits. This one only sold their Chicken Biscuits during breakfast. Good thing as Operation Transformation would have been in trouble that day. :-0

Although I enjoy flying I'm not too crazy about these little birdies. This is the plane I flew into NYC. Can you believe that it didn't even have a jet engine?

This was the first time that I've had time to chill at LaGuardia Airport.

I love big images, especially in ads and this is no exception. I found this to be a really cool ad campaign featuring Tiger Woods and just had to share it with you. I can't help it as it is the advertising/marketing guy in me. :-)

While searching for one of my favorite political talk shows I "ran" across this show about young entrepreneurs and this invention. This young man began at 11 years old and is one of the youngest patent holders in history. He didn't start out wanting to create a business, he just wanted to help his friends learn how to play the guitar with ease. What a great idea! And, his story about the very first version of his product is proof that we should never despise humble beginnings. Enjoy and be encouraged as it is never too late to start!

A Perfect Day

Well, the weather cooperated and we had a GREAT time! Surprisingly, Sunday turned out to be one of the most beautiful days I can remember. And, I captured over 900 images. Wishbone!

Yesterday was a great day! Why? Because our team had a surprise birthday party for our Director at the world-famous Wishbone restaurant. Believe it or not, as long as I've been in Chicago I've never eaten at Wishbones. So, for me this was a much-too-long-coming treat. And, I was not disappointed.

Wishbone is known for it's southern style/Cajun spiced "soul food." Now, I have to admit that having lived in Louisiana and accustomed to real Cajun cooking that I am very hard to please.

Was the food good? Absolutely! Was it like the spicy Cajun food in Louisiana? Not quite. But, to be fair even Wishbone refers to their food as "Southern Reconstruction Cooking" and not Cajun (I was told that it was Cajun cuisine so that's probably why it stuck with me).

I don't recall who shared this with me but I've been told that it is difficult to include the same level of Cajun spices in food outside of Louisiana as it is simply too hot for most people. However, that did not detract from my meal and with the addition of a few spices it was very good. And, I enjoyed our experience so much that I will return soon to sample their world-famous breakfast menu.

So, if you're ever in the Windy City and like soul food with a Southern twist then make it a point to check out Wishbone. Bon Appetite!

In addition to a nice meal you will also enjoy a cozy and contemporary environment. Throughout the restaurant were lots of really colorful and interesting pieces of art.

Eating ice cream for a good cause

It isn't often that you have an opportunity to do something you really love and help raise money for a worthy cause. But, that's exactly what we did at the new Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream store in Oak Park, IL. Ben & Jerry's has partnered with the "One Action" organization to help eradicate poverty throughout the world. If you're not familiar with the "One Campaign" per their website they:

"...seek to raise public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger, disease and efforts to fight such problems in developing countries."

This was the first time I've participated in this event and I have to admit that it was a lot of fun! They gave away one free scope of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and in exchange asked people to make a donation. I think that's a pretty cool idea and guess what? It worked! Despite the unseasonably freezing temperatures people were lined up down the block from the store all day long!

And since Oak Park is such a beautiful community I just had to brave the elements and the traffic to make my contribution to the cause.

I wasn't the best History student in school but for some strange reason I can remember Ben & Jerry's history? Hmmm, must be the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough that is boosting my brain power.

These two young ladies were a few of the super friendly people who helped out with the event. No matter how cold it became nor how long the lines were everyone was really happy to be there. I've participated in countless fund raising events over the years but I don't remember one where there was so much joy and happiness.

Ah, the good stuff! Even in 40 degree weather it still warms the heart.

For those of you who are keeping up with "Operation Transformation" no worries - this was my dinner.

In addition to raising funds for the "One Action" organization this event also helped to raise funds for the Wonder Works Children museum. Another fantastic organization who is making a difference. Per their website:

"Wonder Works, a Children's Museum in Oak Park, provides a hands-on environment intended to strenghten the social, emotional, and intellectual development of children up to age ten. The 6,400 square foot museum includes exhibits, educational programming, a retail store and a children's party room."

No ice cream fund raiser would be complete without a good cup of Starbucks to complete the evening. The ice cream was dinner and the coffee was dessert. :)

This event was a lot of fun and I believe it is a new corporate partnership model for community activism. It is a "win-win" for everyone involved and the end result is that lives are transformed. I encourage you to visit Ben & Jerry's and if you're in the area to also visit and support Wonder Works. The ice cream was good. But, the hungry people who will be fed and the young minds that will be expanded beyond conventional thinking is what's really sweet!

I am in LOVE with this television show! I love "Extreme Home Makeover" and I cry every time I see it. What a wonderful show that just keeps getting better and better. If you've ever wondered what makes SamTheMan "tick" it's shows like this and the ability to help people in need.

If you haven't seen the show then do yourself a favor and check it out next Sunday. This week's episode featured a Pastor and His family who have given their lives and their home to people living on the streets. Wow! What a giving couple.

Even during the "reveal" they both kept saying things like, "...now we can do this for the folks who come to live with us..." and "...we've always wanted to be able to do this for people and now we can..." I'm tellin' you, you have to have a heart of stone not to be touched and moved by episodes like this one.

Once again I am shocked! How in the world was Carly Smithson voted off American Idol? Did you see last night's performances?

And, Syesha Mercado joined Carly in the bottom two performances?

As a former vocalist (and a pretty good one) I'll give you that Syesha may not be the strongest vocalists this season (she's good, very good). But, she is one of if not the best performer on the show. And, as well all know you don't have to be a great vocalists to be an American Idol.

I don't know what's going on nor why Jason Castro is still on the show?

This year they are making me mad. If it wasn't so close to the end I'd quit watching. I'm going to bed before I throw something at my TV (just joking, it's High Definition so I won't be doing that anytime soon). California Dreamin'

Happy Monday! Well, after 180,000+ miles it's time for SamTheMan to have a new car. I wanted to keep my current automobile until 250,00 miles but I may have to alter those plans. I'm one of those people who tries to get the most out of my cars before I plunge into purchasing a new one. Now that the weather is nice I've been out and about looking at new models (and there are so many really nice cars available that it's a hard choice). Working with a legend

Recently, before my departure, I had the opportunity to once again work with and learn from a great photojournalist. Jim Summaria has not only been a photography instructor and mentor but has also been a good friend. Jim never lets me slack off or stay in my comfort zone as he believes in the gifts and talents of his students. I thank God that he's allowed our paths to cross as I always walk away from every encounter with Jim a better photographer and photojournalist. Thanks Jim for giving so much of yourself to not only me, but to all of your photography students.

I'm back home and still getting into the "swing" of things but I will reply to everyone's comments throughout the week. The weather has finally changed for the better so have a joyous, sunny and productive day!

Broken Life

I will be away for a little while as my Aunt has passed. My family is very close so this has not been easy for us.

But, my Aunt lived a long life full of joy and freedom. And, because I am a believer I know she is in a better place. So, instead of dwelling on the pain associated with the loss of a loved one I choose to celebrate the memories and the life she led.

And, in a strange way this image represents both death and life to me. Despite the harsh break across its veins that will adversely effect the the top half of the leaf, the leaf is bigger than the break and the plant will live on being nourished by the power of sun. And for me the loss of a loved one is the same. Despite the harsh break that cuts across the veins in our hearts, we will be nourished by the power of The Son of God and will go on to blossom and mature.

I'm going to miss you and look forward to retuning in several days to continue to share life and encourage one another. Be blessed and I'll talk with you shortly.

I should have known that this was coming. First, there was the Obama Girl. Then, there was the Giuliani Girl. Then, there were the Giuliani Girls vs. the Obama Girls. And now in the midst of one of the most anticipated and watched US Presidential elections we have the McCain Mamas! Yelp, now John McCain has his own YouTube video girls.

At one time in my life I had aspirations of public office and even served in student government in college. So, does this mean that if I run for Governor that someone will make a "SamTheMan's" YouTube video? Hmmm - after seeing all of the stuff going on during this election cycle I think I will stay with photography. Once again in the words of Don King, "Only in America Baby!"

Challenging my creativity

Last summer I decided to "push" myself as I really want to take my compositions into a different direction - more artistic and less newspaper-esque. Don't worry I'll never leave my journalism roots as that is how I see "things." But, I want to grow creatively as a visual artists so I'm always looking for new ways to "see" the world around me.

I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and shoot something that I'm not very good at - still life. I do a great job with product shots due to my marketing and advertising background but at my core I'm a portrait/wedding/photojournalist. So, I created several images of very ordinary objects and challenged myself to make them visually appealing. What objects did I choose? Parts of automobiles. Why? Because I find it very difficult to make parts of a car look really cool and artistic.

Included in this post are the images created during this self-imposed creative exercise. I hope that by sharing these images you will be inspired to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. You'll never grow if you don't try, and if you don't try then you will never really know what you're capable of accomplishing. And as artists we must challenge our creativity so that we can move from where we are to a deeper level of expression. Just a little something to think about. Operation Transformation

Happy Saturday! You will never guess what I did? I worked out with a personal trainer and it was "da' bomb!" Man, was I sore the next day. Actually, it was an interview - I was checking him out to see if this is someone I could work with and he was checking me out to see what my level of fitness was in terms of strength, stamina and flexibility. It was a bittersweet experience as I was shocked to learn just how out of shape I had become (keep in mind that I am half-way to my black belt in Hapkido, use to run 3 miles 3 times a week and play both tennis and basketball every weekend). But, I was in better shape than he thought by just looking at me so all is not lost. I'll keep you posted as my exercise program is about to jump into high gear now that the weather outside is nice. It's a beautiful Saturday so have fun and we'll chat soon!

Happy Wednesday! I'm on my way out but wanted to share a former magazine cover that I had the opportunity to grace. Well, not exactly. While attending one of the Great Western Trade Shows I stopped by the ESPN booth to create a Sports Broadcaster demo video. Besides the portable television studio they also had a photographer on hand who would take your picture and create your own ESPN Magazine cover. Being the "ham" that I am I couldn't resist. Happy Sunday! Our conference is over and it was one of the best we've ever hosted. It wore us out but it was a blessing to everyone who attended so it's all good.

Have you seen one of these? They are featured in the Staples television campaign and they can be purchased at any local Staples store. I use it when things get hectic or stressful to remind me that I'm not alone and greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. So, the next time life comes at you and you feel like you're gonna sink hit the "Easy" button and remember - this too shall pass.

Happy Tuesday! I will be away for a few days as we are hosting our first major conference of the year. But, while I'm gone I wanted to leave you with a little motivation and encouragement - NEVER underestimate the power of an idea.

You've heard me say that before but the more I research the more convicted I become regarding just how far you can go with an idea. We've all had those "why didn't I think of that" moments and yet those fresh, new and innovative ideas keep flowing through our thought lives.

As we head into a new season let's make a commitment together to take hold of one of those fleeting ideas. You never know - that idea could make you a millionaire. Have a great week and never stop believing!

I noticed this license plate as I was headed out the other day and it made me stop in my tracks and take notice. And, since today we celebrate the greatest gift ever given and that was eternal life through Jesus Christ, let's use today and the new Spring season to make a new commitment to live our lives to the fullest. Since Jesus is the resurrection let's resurrect those old dreams that we may have let die; let's resurrect those hopes and aspirations that once drove us to dig deeper into ourselves and let our God-given gifts shine through; and let's resurrect any old joy that we let slip away. With all of the talk this past weekend about Barack Obama I thought it would be cool to take a "chill pill" and have a good laugh. So, let me ask you a question? Have you heard of the Obama girl?

Well, believe it or not this young lady is now a star. As you can tell from all of the recent ups and downs of this year's Presidential race, there's no telling what will happen during a presidential campaign. This young lady and the video producers have been featured on CNN, CNBC and ABC News' Nightline programs. All of this attention is from a short video they posted on YouTube.

As my little Godson and his friends would say, "I'm not mad at them" as they have used the Internet to make a name for themselves. And, the actress featured in this video was recently voted the sexiest woman on the 'Net. As Don King would say, "Only in America baby!"

Happy Sunday. I'm in and out today but just had to say "hi" and wish you a great Sunday!

I've been having some fun with all of my fellow Canon photographers as they are always trying to get me to switch systems. Why? I don't know. I'm told that Canon shooters are like Apple Mac people and they want to evangelize the whole world according to the Gospel of Canon cameras. So, this was my little poke at them. Guess what? It made some of my fellow Nikon shooters mad so I better cool out. Ah, it's all in fun and all of us have had a blast with this spoof.

Now, if someone wants to send me a Canon 5D and a couple of choice IS lenses I am open to exploration. ;-)

Making the Grade

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a Hapkido black belt test. This was a real thrill for me as I have loved anything martial arts since I saw my first Bruce Lee movie as a child. If fact one of my life goals is to earn my black belt.

A lot of people don't know this but I've briefly studied Taekwondo, Shotokan, Gojo-Ryu, Han Mu Do and Hapkido. I've actually been in and out of martial arts for close to 15+ years and had I simply stuck with one system I would have several black belts by now.

But, I finally found a system that I loved and that worked well with my body type and I am half-way towards achieving my black belt in Hapkido. So, seeing someone "make it" was an added thrill and a great learning experience.

I use to train with this group and stopped due to work demands and what seemed like a few months turned into several years. So, I've decided to go back and finish what I've started. I'll share more with you in my next "Operation Transformation" post but until then wanted to share some of the images captured that night.

And, if you're ever in the area I highly encourage and recommend that you check out the outstanding instructors and super-cool people at the Ki-Do Dojo. Not only will you get a great workout but you'll meet some of nicest people on the planet. And to my fellow brother in Hapkido - CONGRATULATIONS!

The Next American Idol

Yes, I've been bit by the "idol" bug. I didn't plan on watching this season and a fellow photog recommended I check it out. So, I did and now I'm hooked.

But check this out - I don't often make predictions but I'm going to go out on a limb and declare that this young man is your next American Idol. Having been a singer and performer "back in the day" I love strong vocals and stage presence and this brother has got it all. I've heard that there is some controversy regarding his past but I hope that he is allowed to continue as he has it all to be a star. Look out for Mr. David Hernandez!

The power of the imagination!

Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention. This was the case with Ephren Taylor who at age 12 taught himself how to create computer video games when his parents told him that they couldn't afford to buy him one. Get this - he didn't know anything about computers nor did he own one.

Well, as the saying goes "the rest is history" and as a high school student he sold his first company for $3 Million dollars. Now at the old age of 24 he is one of the youngest CEOs of a publically traded company (he runs two publically traded companies).

Now, why am I sharing this with you? Because all of us have ideas run through our heads everyday. And the more I study people who have succeeded against great odds the more apparent it becomes that you don't have to have a fancy education, rich parents, tons of connections, or a lot of equipment. What you do need is an idea, the fortitude to take a step of faith, and the perseverance to never quit.

So, what ideas have been running through your mind lately? If Ephren can teach himself how to use computers, program computers, and then build video games without even owning a computer, how much more can you and I do? May I recommend grabbing one of those ideas that come to you daily as you can never underestimate the power of the imagination.

I Luv Analog

As some of you may know I'm a big audio/stereo/music dude. Ever since I was a little boy I always wanted one of those really cool stereo systems like the ones I use to see in the magazines. I got it honest as my Grandmother was a huge music buff and had a really cool stereo system. To make matters worst I grew up listening to music almost everyday. So, when I had the opportunity to purchase some cool gear I did. That was 18 years ago and it looks and sounds just as good as it did when I purchased it.

Well, a fellow Flickr.com photog posted an image of his "old skool" turntable (Technics 1210 MK II) and I was inspired to do the same. I also have one of these babies and still enjoy the snap-crackle-pop of a good record. Although our shots are different after seeing his I had to take a break from nature and wedding photos to pay homage to joys of analog sound. But, what started out as one photo has turned into a small library of stock images. Yes, I got a little carried away.

Are there any other analog sound lovers out there? If so I'd love to hear from you. Be blessed and here's to 45s, 78s, 8-track tapes, reel-to-reel decks, cassettes and good ole' fashioned LPs. :-)

Operation Transformation

Happy Sunday! It is a gorgeous day with warm winter temperatures and a big beautiful sun. Spring is in the air and after all of the crazy subzero weather we've had of late I for one can't wait.

The Spring not only signifies a new season in nature but it also represents a new season in my life. Over the past six years my life has become very sedentary and it has adversely affected my health and fitness. I know the stress, long hours and lack of sleep all play a role but the lack of exercise has been the most detrimental.

So, 2008 (although I actually began back in Sep of '07) represents a year of change, promotion, abundance and growth for me. I am attacking this issue head-on and getting myself back into top shape. This is necessary as life is no good without your health. I am a big proponent of living life to the fullest and believe that you can't live your best life tired, overworked, under payed, stressed and out of shape. Plus, it doesn't glorify God.

Now, some of you maybe wondering why I'm sharing something so personal in such a public forum like the Internet? Well, over the years I've gotten to meet and become good friends with many of you and I know that you want the best for me and will keep me accountable in achieving this goal. Plus, there maybe someone out there reading this post who is dealing with the same issue and could use some encouragement.

So, periodically I will be providing updates on my "road to good health" through my blog. I am looking forward to sharing the joys and pains of this experience as it is my heart's desire that it will encourage someone else that it is never too late to make a change and transform your life. Baby it's cold outside!

Whew! What a crazy week it has been here in the Midwest. We have had some of the most bizarre weather I've experienced since moving to this region. It was -21 degrees F for several days straight. Even for us that is cold for this time of year. And then all of a sudden on Monday we hit 47 degrees F, it rained and all of the snow disappeared. And then last night we were hit with 50 mph wind gusts and the temperature dropped 50 degrees in less than 30 minutes. And, now today we are right back to -20 degrees below zero temps.

Well, although I'd like to blame the weather for my lack of blogging I have been busy busy busy working on several exciting projects that are almost complete:

*Updating/revising images for my online gallery
*Building a new Photography website (you're gonna really like it)
*Putting the finishing touches on my 1st Photoshop action set
*Building an online store for my upcoming Photoshop actions, textures and Lightroom Presets

So, please forgive me as I miss chatting with you and once I'm over this "hump" I can get back to blogging like normal. In the interim please enjoy some of the beauty found in the freezing surroundings. I think I'm going to find a fireplace, get a mocha and listen to "Baby it's cold outside." I'm Prayin' 4 Ya'

Have you seen this video? It is from one of the most thoughtful and talented young Christian hip-hop artists to hit the music scene. He has a song titled "I'm prayin' for you" that is a must hear. There is a line in this song that says "...the other day he told me that he felt like less of a man because he didn't have a five-year plan or a piece of land..." There are many lines in this song that stand out but this one struck me as I began to wonder how many people feel like they're inadequate because of some man-made standard?

I know that right now it is very popular in "church" circles for all men to have a "five-year plan and a piece of land." But, whether you own your own home or not has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus' love for you and His plan for your life. One of the worst things we can do is to compare ourselves with other people. And even more damaging is to somehow equate your self worth with the things you have.

So, today I want to share with anyone who maybe feeling "less than" because they "don't have this or that" that you are a child of God, a royal priesthood and God - the God who created the Universe - approves of you just as you are and where you are! Hold your head up high and don't give up. God has a plan for your life and will fulfill all of your heart's desires.

I understand that this is not my typical blog post but there is someone reading this entry who's been feeling "less than" because of our culture's love affair with money and success. There's nothing wrong with wealth or success but the most important "thing" you can acquire is the love of God. And for that all you have to do is ask as He gives it away for free.

Be encouraged and never let another person's opinion or perception of who you are become your own. You are special and your life, no matter what stage of life you are in, is important to God. And when you really think about isn't His opinion of you the only one that really matters? Just a little something to think about. Have a great day and I hope you enjoy the song.

Well, tonight is the night! As some of you know I am a graduate of Louisiana State University and have been patiently waiting for tonight's championship game. I have some super cool stuff to share with you but it will have to wait one more night as I must don the purple and gold and cheer for the home team.

I know it's been a while but maybe I should have suited up just in case they needed me? I think I could still hold my own during the tunnel run onto the field but after that I'd probably need to inspect the bench and sideline fans to make sure they're operating properly. ;-)

Winter in the Midwest

Happy New Year! It's good to be back in the "saddle" again. I've missed blogging and sharing with you all of the wonderful things God has been doing in my life and with my photography.

Well, winter is here in full force and it has been seriously cold lately. We recently endured a crazy snow/freezing ice storm. It was so cold that I had to pull out my film camera (Nikon F100) as it could withstand the snow/sleet/freezing rain and still function. My digital point and shoot camera began malfunctioning almost immediately once it was exposed to the elements (the first 3 images below were captured using my frozen Fuji point and shoot camera).

I've learned from past experiences that my digital SLR's batteries also get cold quickly in this kind of weather and my digital cameras begin malfunctioning (it was 14 degrees F/ -10 Celsius and with the windchill factor it felt like 2 degrees F/ -16.6 Celsius) But, I kept going despite frost-bitten hands and feet and tried to capture the essence and sheer beauty of winter.

I hope you enjoy these images as some of them have been added to my fine art print collection that will be released this year. And, for all of my friends and fellow photographers living on the west coast may these images be reminders of just how blessed you are.

Happy Sunday! I've been a bad blogger lately as I've been pulled away with all of the Christmas season preparations. But, I "ran" across something that I just had to share with you that will encourage you to believe in your gifts and go live your dreams!

Have you ever heard of Bill Bartman? Probably not, and that's OK as most people haven't. He dropped out of school at 14 years old, was homeless and lived under bridges. But, he pulled it together and became a millionaire as CEO of an oil pipe company. Then, lost it all in the oil crisis of the 1980's. He then went into collections and became a billionaire. Then, scandal ruined his business and he lost it all. Now, he's making millions and helping people live their dreams.

I can't put his story into words as you HAVE to hear it from him (he describes running away from home at 14, sleeping under bridges and eating out of dumpsters as an "upgrade" from living at home). This is not a long interview but I promise you that you will never again believe that you can't make it after listening to his story.

Be prepared to be inspired. The scripture is true - NOTHING is impossible to him who believes!

Thank God for Technology!

As many of you know I'm a huge movie buff. Well, while growing up I remember one film in particular that would always play during the Christmas Holidays - Imitation of Life starring Lana Turner, Sandra Dee, Susan Kohner, Robert Alda, Juanita More and a cameo appearance by the great Mahalia Jackson. When people ask me what is my favorite movie of all time my answer is always the same, it's Imitation of Life.

Now, if you're not a movie buff or if you were born after 1980 you may not be familiar with this brilliant piece of cinema. It was released in 1959 and like the film "Guess who's coming to Dinner" it was light-years ahead of its time. And through the wonders of technology I found a copy on DVD - fully restored and remastered. I'm in movie Heaven!

This film deals with the "real" issues of the human experience including the passion and pursuit of a dream, the price of success, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, relationships, race in America before the civil rights era, the entertainment industry, maternal bounds, forgiveness, the love of a Mother, childhood love, love and love affairs, self-identity, self-hatred, racism, the bond between women, the roles of men and women in relationships, homelessness, compassion, empathy, death and the loss of a parent, and on and on and on.

After seeing this film at least 50 times I never get tired of it and I cry every time I see it. For this film not to touch your heart it would have to be made of stone. I am telling you that this film will make the hardest of hearts as soft as cotton.

If you've never seen it before do yourself a favor and order a copy here and take a moment to view what is truly a brilliant piece of work. Both Juanita Moore (who plays Annie) and Susan Kohner (who plays her daughter Sarah Jane) were both nominated for Academy Awards for "Best Supporting Actress" for their performances. And, if I'm not mistaken their nominations were the very first for an African-American woman. Thank God for technology!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Now that the Thanksgiving Holidays have passed it's time to look forward to Christmas. I LOVE this time of year and Thanksgiving and Christmas are my favorite holidays. There's so much to love that I can't mention it all but I love the snow, turkey, sweets, hot chocolate, family, friends, shopping and "spirit" of giving that permeates everything and everyone.

Recently, the town where I work held their annual "Christmas Walk" - a special time where the local vendors stay open late and everyone comes out to shop. There are horse-driven sleds, reindeer, roasted marsh mellows and the store owners have window displays featuring real people instead of mannequins.

This was my first time participating in this event and I have to admit that despite the freezing cold I had a blast (it was approx. 20F/-6C without the wind-chill factor). I couldn't capture everything as my hands were frostbitten so I hope these photographs make you feel like you were there as it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. One local vendor set up a petting zoo where the children could pet reindeer. Being a big kid myself you know I had to get my "pet" on.

Nothing special here but since LPs are almost extinct I thought it would be cool to share a real-life record store with those of us who still own and operate Turntables. What is a Turntable? Well, you see we use to take this thing called a record, which was a large piece of black plastic, and then we would put it on...never mind...

This is a new store that has opened recently and I don't quite "get" their Christmas window display. I mean I "get" it but I don't "get" it. Got it?

This is an intimate apparel store and for their "live" window display they featured two belly dancers - one naughty and one nice. I'm not going to touch that one...

For The Love of Water

This year we were blessed with summer weather right up to the beginning of November. And, I had the opportunity to spend two full weekends at the marina and literally created hundreds of photographs of the beauty surrounding me there. I just love water and sometimes I feel like a "fish out of water" when I'm not playing in it or around it.

Now that the snow is making its way towards us, I thought it would be cool to reminiscence about this year's long summer days by the water. And to also share a few of the newest editions to my upcoming line of fine art prints available for sale. :-) Have a blessed and joyous weekend!

All Alone

While photographing the marina during our extended summer this year I met this gentleman walking along the lake. He is homeless and everything he owned was in a shopping bag over his shoulder. He walked over while I was taking pictures and started sharing with me all of the changes to the marina as he use to swim there as a child. We had a wonderful conversation that lasted over 30 minutes and I really enjoyed spending time with him and talking about sports, boats, birds, photography and "stuff." Although I didn't get to pray with him, we did share words of encouragement and I kept reminding him that God hasn't forgotten about him and that his present condition is temporary. Although he seemed depressed (and understandably so) his eyes lit up when the conversation became encouraging and I could see that there was still hope in his heart.

When it was time for me to leave he shook my hand and thanked me for the conversation and we both went our separate ways. What was interesting about this encounter was that he never asked me for anything nor did he share with me how he ended up homeless. He did share with me that he was in a shelter and that it was fairly safe. One of the last images of the marina that day was this man sitting by himself with his feet hanging over the cement wall. As I turned and the view changed to the height, power and money of the downtown skyscrapers I couldn't help but think to myself "there but by the grace of God goes I."

Technically this isn't a perfect photograph - it was a hurried "snapshot" as the sun was setting I was trying to capture the orange hues of the sun against his face. He didn't care for my impromptu portrait so I didn't ask if I could take another one. But, the more I look at this photo the more I like it because to me it speaks of the homeless experience in America. Just like the homeless people in streets, you can see his face and yet you can't. You can see his eyes and yet you can't really tell if they are there. You can see his blue-ish clothing and yet it it blends into the blue background of the sky and water. And in many respects it is this "I see you but I really don't see you" component of homelessness that allows this condition to continue. I didn't intend to make a political statement but in many ways this photo is the face of homelessness in my country. And, IMHO the time has come for this condition to die.

My photography class ROCKS! I have to say it again as I am so happy to be in this class. All, and I mean ALL of the photographers are so good that every time we get together their work challenges and inspires me. This is a special group of visual artists and I thank God for making this possible. I've been trying to get into this class for the past two years. But, given the high level of talent and expertise of my classmates I'm glad that it took so long to make this happen.

There's something special about being around people who are good at something you enjoy. You can challenge one another and help each other pull out new aspects of your gifting that you didn't know existed. And that's what my classmates do to me every week. What makes this experience even better is that not only are my classmates great photographers, but they are also great people.

May this testimony encourage you to invest in developing your God-given gifts. I am a living witness that not only will you get better at something you love to do, but you will make new friends who will inspire and encourage you long after the class is over. Be blessed and keep shooting!

During every class we share our assignment images with everyone for feedback and instruction. This particular class focuses on composition and lighting and how to make your images tell a compelling story regardless of the subject.

Just practicing my bounced flash technique as I LOVE natural looking light even if it is artificially created. By the way, these two dude's work is so good that they are operating on another level beyond mere humans. Yes, their images are that good!

Here, the famous Jim Summaria is teaching us an "old skool" lighting technique that allows us to balance natural light with artificial light to emulate a professional strobe. Shooting techniques like this are quickly fading so I am super grateful to Jim for sharing these tips with us.

I like the balanced lighting in this test image as it looks natural and diffused and yet, it isn't. Hmmm, inquiring minds want to know how did you do this? You'll have to take Jim's class to find out. :-)

Impromptu Headshots

This year I've probably shot more head shots than I ever would have imagined. And, most of them were "on the spot" and unplanned. I'm becoming well known for taking pictures of friends and strangers alike. I LOVE people and I love photographing people so I can't help myself.

One of the lessons I've learned from photographing so many different people in so many different situations is that the best head shots are those where you simply relax and let your personality shine through. I realize that there are tons of fancy lighting equipment and special backdrops that can really help in producing a quality head shot. But, I'm going to let you in on a little photographer secret - there's nothing more powerful than a genuine smile.

For example, the images below were all shot on-the-spot and yet have something "special" about them. It's not the backdrops (one doesn't even have a backdrop or wall) and I didn't use any fancy lighting equipment. What makes these images special is that all of the models in them are truly beautiful people. And, for the few minutes we were together they let their real personalities come forward and that's why these impromptu head shots are so special. Playing around in the dark

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. While shooting several night shots for black and white images for class I started "playing" around with different exposures and shutter speeds. And to my surprise I was able to change the way some of my images appeared by deliberately manipulating the light metering and automatic exposure compensation. I know it sounds to "techie" but the results were several really cool night images. May these images inspire you to experiment with your gifts to take your level of proficiency to a new level of excellence. Changing of the Guard

Well, it is finally winter. We've been hangin' on to the warm weather as long as we could but yesterday Mother Nature made it clear that it is time for a new season. Although the extended summers of the past few years are probably signs of Global Warming, I have to admit that I've been loving each and every one! There is nothing quite like playing tennis in early November in 70 degree weather surrounded by autumn leaves.

So, in honor of what has been a beautiful summer, and in recognition that there is a season to everything, may these images be a reminder of God's divine plan for change and growth in our lives. The death of one season always means the birth of a new one. Have a blessed and empowered day!

Playing around in the dark

Happy Sunday everyone! This weekend I traveled to Northwestern University to capture several images as part of my homework assignment for class. Unfortunately, I arrived at dusk and didn't capture everything I wanted. But, the lack of natural light gave me the opportunity to have fun and play around in the dark.

Northwestern is a beautiful campus that sits along Lake Michigan. I will be returning soon to capture the true beauty of the campus and the town of Evanston, IL, where it is located.

Here are several of my favorites from this weekend's excursion that I hope you enjoy. Be blessed and NEVER stop believing!

This image has been "tweaked" in Lightroom. The original, although being correctly exposed, was just too dark and "blah" for my taste so I gave it a little "SamTheMan" love. Unfortunately, I can't use any of my Photoshop or Lightroom skills in my photography class. And that's OK - I think?

This is one of the buildings that are part of the Medill School of Journalism. I have interviewed at Northwestern and am standing in faith to return for my Master's in Journalism and Integrated Marketing.

Going to another level!

Well, I did it. I am back in school. I guess I'm one of those "weird" ones as I really enjoyed college and love being in an environment dedicated to learning. As some of you may know I am self-taught and have never had a photography class - until now.

This particular class is taught by Jim Summaria at Harper's College. Jim has over 25 years experience as a professional and I'm looking forward to learning his "old skool" approach to photography.

I'm sharing all of this with you to encourage you to never stop believing in yourself and the gifts God has given you! Yes, some aspects of your gifting will come easy and others will require development. Never be afraid or ashamed to seek counsel, instruction and direction in your area of gifting.

As gifted as they were both Mozart and Beethoven practiced daily. And, Michael Jordan who is arguably the greatest player in the history of Basketball, shot 300 jump shots before every game his entire career. So, never back away from an opportunity to develop yourself.

This is definitely going to be an adventure and I'll keep you posted. Have a joyous and power-packed week!

It took me 10 minutes to figure out where to park as all of the signs said that buildings "L - P" were in this section. But, as you can see building "Z" is in this area. Must be the new math...

It is hard to tell in this image but Jim is looking right at me and he's not happy. I think he just realized that I was taking pictures and would probably post some of them on my blog. Now, would I do something like that?

The Heavens Were Dancing

Today we were under severe Thunderstorm warnings and this afternoon we enjoyed one of the most beautiful storm cloud formations I have ever seen. According to the news reports we had wind gust of up to 70 mph. I believe it as my camera was almost blown right out of my hands as I captured these images.

Unfortunately, these images don't do the storm justice as not only were these large masses of clouds moving quickly across the sky, but in each mass of clouds there were other clouds churning and moving about. It was truly beautiful and it was as if the Heavens were dancing.

I didn't shoot much of the ground as I was in an industrial area and there wasn't anything visually appealing to capture so you can't really appreciate the scale and size of these formations (the one with the airplane literally covered 2/3 of the sky). And as fast as these huge storm clouds appeared, they also disappeared just as fast. Believe it or not within 20 minutes the show was over. But, what a show it was!

Creepin'

As I am writing this post I keep hearing the Luther Vandross song "Creepin'" playing in my head as that's what I did this morning. No, not like in the song - I got up super early to photograph the sunrise at the marina. After admiring the beautiful sunrise over Lake Michigan during last week's Chicago Marathon, I just had to return while the weather was still warm to spend some quality time admiring and photographing God's handiwork.

Fortunately, it rained this morning and the streets were still wet enough to to give that lovely "gloss" effect to the pavement. Despite the early hours Chicago is a town that never sleeps. But, unlike New Yorkers Chicagoans do take a break every "now and then" and I found the solitude and glow of the street lights to be absolutely gorgeous. Chicago is truly a beautiful city during the day and at night. Here are a few images from my early morning adventures that I hope you enjoy. Be blessed and have a great week!

Happy Saturday! Wow, it's almost gone and I'm just waking up. But, that was deliberate as I needed to seriously catch up on my rest as I didn't get much last week.

I'm almost done with the all of my Chicago Marathon editing (plus the editing from another project that a very patient client has been waiting for) and I'm kinda anxious to finish the slide show because it is going to be so cool. And, while organizing my HD I found these images I've wanted to share with you for months. Gotta run, have a great weekend and enjoy this beautiful Saturday!
